Many splendid walks can be enjoyed from the village, including the local beauty spot Tarn Hows, Grisedale Forest is also near by with its numerous nature trails, picnic areas and fascinating sculptures, making this an ideal centre for walking, cycling or touring.

Hawkshead has many historical connections including Hawkshead Grammar School (which William Wordsworth attended) and the Beatrix Potter Gallery, exhibiting illustrations by the famous childrens author. Hill Top lies 2 miles South of Hawkshead and is a delightful 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her famous stories.
